VisitOrlando.com to add travel-booking engine

The Orlando/Orange County Convention & Visitors Bureau has cut a deal with Travelocity.com L.P. that allows visitors researching an Orlando vacation to book their stay right on the agency's website. The area's tourism promoters say they wanted to offer one-stop shopping on the site, VisitOrlando.com, which draws millions of potential visitors a year. The agency said that, after it talked with various online travel operators and other companies, Travelocity brought the "best total package" to the table. The bureau site currently provides information about local attractions and hotels, but online visitors have to switch to other websites to act on their plans.

Vacation Travel Recovers, but Frugality Is Focus

Vacations have become a luxury for many Americans trying to make ends meet in this economic downturn, but there are signs that people are slowly, even timidly, on the move again.

More people expected to travel for Labor Day

Most Americans seem to be watching their vacation budget, still concerned about the sluggish economy. A new report from AAA estimates travel for Labor Day will be up this year. Even though more people are trying to get away, they are sticking closer to home. Experts say around 35 million people will travel at least 50 miles from home during the holiday next weekend. 90 percent will travel by car, because of the break on gas prices. Many are choosing to rent vehicles instead of taking their own. Local car rental companies have seen this trend all summer and are prepared for a high-traffic holiday. Travelers say dining, shopping and visiting relatives and friends are the three most-planned activities. AAA estimates travelers will spend around $50 more this year compared to last year.

U.S., Japan Travel Expands With AMR, Delta, Hawaiian Flights

U.S. and Japanese business travel may be easier after Delta Air Lines Inc., American Airlines and Hawaiian Holdings Inc. won routes to Tokyo’s Haneda airport, favored by executives flying to the capital. The U.S. Transportation Department approved four flights for the carriers yesterday while UAL Corp.’s United Airlines and Continental Airlines Inc., which announced a plan to merge this week, were denied the Haneda flights they sought.

European airlines restricted again on Saturday

Airlines have again had to cancel flights from European airports with disruptions caused by ash spewing from an Icelandic volcano. On Saturday, flights were affected in Spain, France and Portugal. Hundreds of flights had to skirt around the plume of ash which has again emerged from the Eyjafjoell volcano, causing more chaos for air traffic. European air traffic controllers have said the potential for the volcano to cause more delays is ongoing, with the ash cloud particles expanding at various altitudes. It is believed the reduction of available airspace grounded around 5,000 planes in Europe on Saturday. In Iceland some 60 people living around the volcano have evacuated the area following the fresh eruptions. The smoke plume over the volcano had risen to seven kilometres on Saturday and was bearing southeast.

Immigration agency to review daily quota of Chinese tourists

The National Immigration Agency will hold a cross-agency meeting Monday to review the quota system used to regulate the entry of Chinese tourists, following requests by tourism operators to increase the quota and shorten visa processing times. The immigration agency currently issues a maximum 4,311 exit and entry permits to visitors from China per day, and it takes five days to process the application. During holiday seasons, with authorization from the Ministry of the Interior, the agency can issue up to 6,000 permits per day, according to an agency spokesman. The immigration agency has found that some travel agents failed to observe the regulations and arranged for Chinese visitors to enter without exit and entry permits. The practice posed a dilemma for the agency, because it was forced to send back the undocumented visitors to China aboard the same airplane in which they came.

Food companies look to developing markets to fatten sales

Remember Tang? Astronauts used to drink it, so it got a lot of ink in the 1960s and 1970s. Nowadays, it gets about as much notice as the space program, holding just a small slice of the U.S. powdered-drinks market. But in developing markets from Brazil to China, Kraft Foods Inc. has turned its Tang brand into a juggernaut with $750 million in annual sales. Kraft's boxed macaroni and cheese, on the other hand, is a famous product that dominates its market in the United States. But in developing markets, Kraft doesn't even focus on it. The upshot: Powdered cheese food doesn't travel well; powdered beverages do.

Seven secrets for getting attention online

Just tweet about your troubles, and the airline, car rental company or hotel will fix it. At least that's the conventional wisdom. And while it's true that travel companies are spending a lot of time online listening to their customers, they're not necessarily paying attention to all of us. "Travel companies pick and choose who to respond to in social media," says social media expert Ryan Goff of the advertising firm MGH Inc. "You better believe that a Web celebrity with 100,000 Twitter followers is going to catch a company's attention over the casual tweeter with only 10 friends." Even online, some travelers are more equal than others. Question is, how to become a somebody? ShopSTL Marketplace

Hawaii-funded Medicaid travel assistance abuses curbed

The state's system for paying to get low-income elderly and disabled clients to medical appointments was so loosely monitored that an unknown amount of taxpayer dollars was squandered shuttling some patients to shopping malls, beaches, movie theaters and other unauthorized destinations.
