Tourism for Tomorrow Awards deadline extended

The World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC) is pleased to confirm that the application deadline for the Tourism for Tomorrow Awards 2010 entries, co-sponsored by Travelport and The Leading Travel Companies’ Conservation Foundation, has been extended until Monday, December 14, 2009. Last week, WTTC announced that its annual Global Travel & Tourism Summit will be held from May 25-27, 2010 in Beijing, China. The Tourism for Tomorrow Awards have been an integral part of the summit for the past five years, and as the summit dates next year are later than usual in the WTTC events calendar, this has allowed WTTC to extend the awards deadline.

Thousands of Budget customers due refunds

MORE THAN 2,000 Budget Travel customers are due refunds after the collapse of the company, according to the provisional liquidator. The cost of refunding customers who had bookings but had not travelled is expected to amount to several million euro, liquidator Simon Coyle, of Mazars, said yesterday. About 400 people had been expecting to travel this weekend before the company went into liquidation, on Wednesday. About 700 Budget customers who were away at the time of its collapse are due back in Ireland this weekend on the flights they were originally scheduled to travel on. The remaining 50 will come back next weekend.

Business air travel is picking up

Early this year, when Indian companies felt the tremors of the global economic meltdown and embarked on a cost-cutting drive, business travel by air was one of the first few expenses to be struck off the list. This had badly hit Anoop Kanuga, who owns a travel firm in Mumbai. His airline ticket bookings for business clients plunged to new lows. The downward trend in domestic business travel continued for most of last year and the first half of 2009. However, over the last one month, Kanuga has witnessed a gradual pick-up in corporate spend on air travel.

Priceline.com Reports Financial Results for 3rd Quarter 2009

Priceline.com Incorporated (Nasdaq: PCLN) today reported its financial results for the 3rd quarter 2009. Gross travel bookings for the 3rd quarter, which refers to the total dollar value, inclusive of all taxes and fees, of all travel services purchased by consumers, were $2.7 billion, an increase of 32.8% over a year ago.
