2010 forecast: Lasting change for business travel?

A forecast released Wednesday confirmed what many in the tourism industry have feared: The global recession could have a lasting effect on business travel. Despite pent-up demand for face-to-face meetings, any improvement in the amount of business travel next year will be small, according to the Global Business Travel Forecast released by American Express Co. That's because businesses have begun investing in alternatives to travel during the record-long recession and will continue to be more discerning when it comes to how and when to take trips.

PB Advertising & Promotion Commission Sues Online Travel Companies For Taxes

The Pine Bluff Advertising & Promotion Commission filed a lawsuit Friday against several online travel companies in an attempt to collect more hotel taxes. The lawsuit, filed in Jefferson County Circuit Court, said the online companies, such as Expedia, Travelocity and Orbitz, make deals with hotels to get rooms at discounted rates. The companies then market the rooms on their Web sites at a higher price, according to a news release from Bob Purvis, executive director of the commission. When a customer books a hotel room, he pays the taxes on the higher rate, the lawsuit said.

Gillett Travel Firm Collapses

Around 4,000 British travellers might find themselves without their holidays as cruise agency G&B Travel, which operates under the name Gillett Travel, folds. G&B Travel, based in Bolton, has been offering cruise deals with most of the large cruise companies: Royal Caribbean, Celebrity cruises and Disney. But on Friday 11th September it said it couldn’t meet its future liabilities and so would immediately cease trading. The advice from ABTA is that anybody who has made a booking through G&B Travel or Gillett Travel should make direct contact with the cruise line in question to get the most recent information about their holiday’s status. The holidays should all be covered by ATOL, which is a financial protection scheme for holidaymakers. If an ATOL tour operator fails, the ATOL scheme ensures customers contracted with the ATOL holder for an air package or a flight, do not lose the money paid over or are not stranded
